For decades, residents have identified with the generic “Four States” moniker expressed by regional media outlets. The four local WIB areas together comprise forty counties that serve as a canvas to further define the region through such factors as commuting patterns, transportation systems, industry networks, collaborative partnerships, and retail draw.
At the crossroads of America, the Quad-States area has transportation connectivity through Interstate 44, Interstate 540, U.S. Highway 71, U.S. Highway 69 and others. Key enhancements in local roadways are either underway or are slated for future years. This is especially true with recent improvements on U.S. 71 and further upgrades planned for the ultimate transition to the new Interstate 49 as a key export corridor.
The labor market that exists among the quad-states area is very fluid, as demonstrated in the enclosed diagram. Altogether, nearly a third of the region’s total labor pool commutes across county borders to worksites. More than 35,000 cross state borders in their job commutes, primarily in a concentration of eighteen counties adjacent to the bordering state boundaries.
