Going Green Symposium Set for February 11th

February 4, 2009

The Going Green Symposium, presented by the Joplin Business Journal and KSN-TV, is set for Thursday, February 11th at the Butchers Block Banquet Center in Joplin.  The summit represents an important milestone for green-minded business leaders across the region.

The daytime symposium begins with an Energy Development forum from 11:00-12:30, followed by a networking lunch.  Keynote speaker for the lunch is Dan Eberle on the role of education in going green.  Networking and exhibit breaks are planned throughout the conference.

Additional program panel discussions will concentrate on ways to promote environmental conservation through recycling/reduction of waste, innovative use of technology or common practices to produce cost savings, promote efficient use of energy resources, and generate economic benefits for producers and consumers. Both Panel Discussions will be moderated by Jim Jackson, News Director for KSNF/KODE TV Joplin, MO.

An awards banquet is planned for the evening of the symposium.  Award categories include Waste/Reuse Projects, Alternative Fuels, Green Practices, Green Manufacturing, Energy Utilization, Community Awareness, Green Environment, and an overall Green Champion award.

The WIB is partnering with event organizers at the Joplin Business Journal and KSN-TV as a sponsor for the summit event.  Leading off Thursday’s symposium is a WIB-moderated event titled:  The Business of Energy:  A Forum on Energy Solutions and Development for Communities. When we think about energy, we often think about the negatives-high gas prices, environmental challenges and national security issues. However, many communities are seeing that there are ways to capitalize on economic opportunities related to energy.

The Workforce Investment Board of Southwest Missouri is hosting the opening forum in conjunction with the Going Green Symposium. The Business of Energy: A Forum on Energy Solutions and Development for Communities is set for 11:00 to Noon on February 12th as part of the kickoff to the Going Green Symposium.

Join other community residents in an open discussion on how to turn energy-related issues into a positive in your community. As a forum participant, you will be joining thousands of others holding similar conversations across the region, to develop strategies for energy-related economic development, from bio-energy to sustainable design to green collar job development.

Your community’s feedback will be used in presentations at Southern Growth’s 2009 annual conference, and in developing Southern Growth’s 2009 Report on the Future of the South, a high profile policy report that is shared with Southern Governors and regional leaders in business and education.

For more information on the symposium, contact the Joplin Business Journal at (417) 623-9901.  Information on the WIB’s Energy forum is available from Jasen Jones at (417) 206-1717, Ext. 224, or by email to ceo@workforcezone.net.
